Cecile de Croy was the third daughter and fourth child of King Philip de Croy and his wife, Queen Isabella de Croy.First known as Madame Troisième, she later became Madame Cecile.
Out of her other two sisters, Madame Blanche and Madame Angelique, Sophie is less known. Her birth at  Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye was relatively unremarked. Unlike the other children of King Philip, she was not raised at the Court, but sent to live at the Abbey of Fontevraud.
She has a shy, reserved nature, and was often considered ugly and uninteresting. She is reported to have a phobia of thunder, and it is known that she reacts strongly toward it.
In 1615, it was suggested that she marry her cousin, Ferdinand VI of Spain, as his wife was seriously ill at the time. Despite her illness, though, the Queen of Spain survived.
She does not exercise any influence at the Court, but lets herself be directed by her youngest brother, Léonce, often getting involved in his machinations.
