Said to be as beautiful as an angel, Philibert de Valois was the third son of the Baron and Baroness de Valois. The member of an old noble family, in 1632, when he was 15, Philibert became the lover of Léonce de Croy, the Duke of Orléans and younger brother of Jean-Gaston de Croy, the Crown Prince.
After the old Baron's death, Prince Léonce invited his lover at the Court, where Philibert found an atmosphere congenial to his talents for intrigue, gallantry and pleasure. There, from various small diplomatic missions he succeeded in obtaining considerable profits, being destitute, and having no scruples whenever money was in question.
